In the early 1920s, the Netherlands faced a housing challenge comparable to the one we face today. In the midst of this crisis, architect J.J.P. Oud (1890–1963) realised a remarkable residential building in Rotterdam. What can we learn from his housing design and from other future visions developed over the decades, and which opportunities are there now? Rotterdam-based studio AAAN posed these questions in the spring of 2025. During the lecture series ‘De Woonestafette’ (Housing Relay), five young architects offered reflections on a century of housing design. Their analyses of the ideals of the past gives us an inspiring glimpse into the conception of Dutch residential architecture.
