Border Conditions presenteert de eerste resultaten van de onderzoeks- en ontwerpstudio van de faculteit Bouwkunde aan de TU Delft. Border Conditions presents the initial results from the research and design studio of the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology. The book offers a collection of essays and experimental architecture projects that emanated from research into the spatial impact of socio-political developments, with an emphasis on mapping the contemporary urban milieu. The book provides a thematic overview of the contemporary discussion surrounding borders in architecture, from conflict situations to marginal urban areas; from Kinshasa-Brazzaville, Gibraltar, Kaliningrad and Kiev to Benidorm, Marseille and Rotterdam. A selection of projects shows how mapping can be used to not only register and interpret urban processes, but to show how these design principles can act as the basis for architectural interventions.

De verbinding tussen verstedelijking en landschapsontwikkeling is cruciaal Het stelt de praktijken van stedenbouw en landschapsarchitectuur voor nieuwe uitdagingen en verhoogt de relevantie van de Nederlandse ervaring. In deze publicatie gaat de aandacht naar het tekenen als methode en de grond als object van bewerking.

The Netherlands has a long tradition of interaction between landscape, urban design and architecture. The urban planning office of Frits Palmbout is a follower of this legacy. The massive wave of urbanization in the world is concentrated in coastal areas and deltas. In the Netherlands, this development and relation between cities and landscapes affected the course during many centuries. Climate change and sea level rise puts it back on the agenda. The connection between urbanization and landscape is critical. New challenges in the practices of urban planning and landscape architecture increases the relevance of the Dutch experience. This publication focuses on drawing as a method and ground as the object of processing.

Vincenzo Scamozzi en de architectuur van de Gouden Eeuw

Catalogus bij de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het Koninklijk Paleis op de Dam in Amsterdam, van 30 juni tot 12 september 2010. De publicatie gaat vooral in op de invloed van de Italiaanse Renaissance-architect Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548-1616) op de Hollandse bouwkunst in de Gouden Eeuw. Zijn theorie vormde de basis voor het ontwerp van het toenmalige stadhuis van Amsterdam, nu het Koninklijk Paleis, door architect Jacob van Campen. Scamozzi stond aan de wieg van het Hollands Classicisme. Hij schreef het handboek L'idea della Architettura Universale (de grondgedachte van de universele bouwkunst), dat bekend staat als het meest complete werk op het gebied van toen eigentijdse toepassing van de antieke bouwstijl. Vooral zijn ideeën over zuilenvorming kregen veel navolging. Scamozzi werkte de rekenkundige benadering van zijn voorganger, architect Andrea Palladio, hierin uit. L’idea was erg belangrijk voor Nederlandse architecten. Door de vertaling naar het Nederlands werd het toegankelijk voor alle ambachtslieden. Het lag dan ook veel in werkplaatsen van bijvoorbeeld timmerlieden en metselaars. Vanuit het Nederlands werd het boek vervolgens vertaald in andere talen, zoals het Engels, Duits en Frans.

Exhibition catalogue Royal Palace Amsterdam 30 June to 12 September 2010. Vincenzo Scamozzi was the most important pupil and follower of the famous Italian architect Andrea Palladio. Most of his designs were for palaces in Venice and Vicenza, or for villas in the countryside around Venice. Scamozzi’s relatively austere style typically incorporates the classical orders of columns and shows a feeling for balanced proportions. These distinctive elements of his work were to have a profound influence on the classicist architecture of the Dutch Golden Age. Jacob van Campen introduced Scamozzi’s style in his designs for the Town Hall of Amsterdam and the Mauritshuis and Noordeinde Palace in The Hague. Pieter Post, Philips Vingboons and other architects followed his example as the style gained favour with the Dutch elite.The exhibition examines Scamozzi’s architectural theory in the light of important models and drawings. It also looks at Scamozzi’s recently researched ’second life’ in Northern Europe, with reference to the architecture of the Royal Palace and other examples of his work in the Netherlands and Northern Europe.

In deze publicatie kijkt Moneo met een analytische blik naar zijn eigen werk. 21 zorgvuldig geselecteerde projecten worden in detail gepresenteerd, vanaf het eerste idee tot het voltooide werk. Zij zijn geïllustreerd met een reeks nieuwe afbeeldingen. Onder de projecten: Joan Miró Foundation in Mallorca, het Museum voor Moderne Kunst in Stockholm, de kathedraal in Los Angeles en de uitbreiding van het Prado in Madrid. Deze worden gecombineerd met eigen tekeningen van Moneo alsmede documentair materiaal van het ontwerp.

In this publication Moneo turns his analytical eye to his own work. Twenty-one carefully selected projects are presented in detail, from the initial idea through construction to the completed work. They are each illustrated by a array of new colour images. Among the projects are Joan Miró Foundation in Majorca, The Moderna Museet and Arkitekturmuseet in Stockholm, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles and the Prado extension in Madrid. These are combined with Moneo’s own drawings as well as informal documentary material from the design of each of the projects.
