On Oosterdokseiland, near Amsterdam’s Central Station became the location of the new conservatory, where urban redevelopment transformed this site into a densely built area between the old city centre and the banks of the IJ. The building was designed by architect Frits van Dongen and contains five concert halls connected by an ingenious system of staircases. The location is extremely inviting thanks to its atmosphere and decor particularly on the adjoining mezzanine, where there is a bar with a view of old Amsterdam. Above the entrance, there are four storeys with classrooms where are kinds of instruments can be played. And there are two storeys with practice spaces as well. This book examines the historical significance of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and looks in great depth at the new building, its layout and its floor plans.
