The Serbian architect and writer Bogdan Bogdanović (1922-2010) created the most striking memorials in Europe. These include the legendary 'Flower of Concrete' in Jasenovac and the Piranesi Prize-winning memorial park in Vukovar on the Danube, which was partially destroyed during the Yugoslav civil war. Bogdanović's 20 or so monuments, memorials and necropolises in all parts of the former Yugoslavia symbolise the cultural diversity and tragic history of the Balkans.
