After three decades of vacancy, the building evoked the bleak imagery of Tarkovsky’s film 'Stalker': the roof cladding was full of holes, several ceilings had already collapsed, and moisture had seeped through every floor. A birch tree had taken root in the façade on the second floor, and ferns were growing inside the rooms. With a sensitivity to the raw beauty of brick, bodensteiner fest is gradually bringing this Gründerzeit house in Chemnitz-Sonnenberg back to life. Through rich visual material, the architects recount a remarkable revival - one that offers fresh perspectives on today’s urgent questions around sustainable construction and new forms of living. A powerful statement: existing buildings as vital resources for the future.
