Functionalism had a major influence on European architecture, particularly in the period 1920-1940. In the Netherlands this movement was commonly known as the 'Nieuwe Bouwen'. The Nieuwe Bouwen was characterised by a concern with light, air and hygiene and by a functional use of materials and technology. Buildings, both restored and unrestored, by leading architects such as Duiker, Van Eesteren, Oud and Rietveld can be seen throughout the Netherlands; buildings which still excite the imagination. This book provides an overview in words and pictures of one of the most important Dutch architectural styles of the twentieth century.
