A compact reference on moral and religious architect Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991) and his influence on architecture. The encyclopaedic section (lexicon) contains a succinct explanation of his architectural theories in well-organised and richly illustrated entries. Van der Laan’s work is also shown in context and the book provides information on key discussion points, people and subjects such as the use of colour and urban planning. A guidance section deals with his buildings. In addition to many, unknown, works by Van der Laan, another 50 or so projects are included by architects who were influenced in one way or another by his ideas, both now and in the past (the so-called ‘Bossche’ School), at home and abroad. As a result, the book shows, for the first time, the rich diversity of architecture in which the ‘plastic number’ played a role. The book is completed with a topographical overview of several hundred buildings plus short biographies of the architects whose work is included.
