(German language) Buildings account for a significant proportion of global energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Not only the use of a house, but also the production and disposal of building materials – and thus the entire life cycle of a building – contribute to its ecological footprint. How can we gain a thorough overview of this complex and pressing issue? With a focus on Switzerland, this concise handbook shows what factors are relevant for climate-conscious construction and use of houses. It clearly explains key figures relating to operations, individual materials and entire building components. Visualised data, relationships, and comparisons convey a quantitative understanding of the environmental impact of houses, also in relation to other areas of life. The components of a life cycle assessment are explained using sample calculations for a residential building, and its ecological balance is compared with that of other building types. The result is a useful tool for architects and anyone who depends on data and facts regarding sustainability in the construction sector.
