Riksen examines major changes at Rikshospitalet, part of Oslo University Hospital’s restructuring. As of publication, construction is underway, with some buildings demolished and functions relocated until the new hospital’s expected completion in 2031, marking 25 years since Rikshospitalet’s move from Pilestredet to Gaustad. Architect photographer Rasmus Hjortshøi was commissioned in 2023 to document the hospital before construction began. His photos, reflecting 25 years of wear, form the book’s core, supplemented by texts from architects, users, and project managers. The book emphasizes Rikshospitalet’s humanistic design principles and advocates preserving them as the hospital expands, facing rising demands for efficiency and standardization.
