"Motherland and Progress" ("Haza es haladas") the motto of the 19th-century Hungarian reformers reflected the programme the country embraced in its drive to define its identity and shape its future. Nowhere is it more evident in the material world than in architecture, which rose from slumbering provincialism to international brilliance within a hundred years.
