The first part of an anthology of texts about design in the Netherlands deals with the period starting at the end of the nineteenth century until 1940. The next part covers the second half of the twentieth century. Organized by theme, the texts anthologized here give an impression of design-related discussions and issues from that period, of design criticism and design practice. Subjects include good form, idealism, living, advertising, ornament and the machine, but a chapter is also dedicated to the role of people commissioning assignments and the collaboration between designer and industry. Anthologist Frederike Huygen drew from an abundant amount of sources, from design criticism and manifestos to letters, books and magazines. She supplements these source texts with an essay about designing based on the VANK (Association for Craftsmanship and Artisanship). The book contains biographies of the persons involved, as well as characterizations of magazines and periodicals. In collaboration with Premsela.
