Born in Paris in 1939 in a family of architects and musicians. He studied town planning and architecture simultaneously, graduating in 1966 as a town planner from the University of Paris and in 1969 as an architect from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Parallel with his work as an architect in France, where he has designed head offices (Alcatel, Paris), offices, housing, hotel complexes (Hôtel Méridien, Nouméa, Hôtel Hyatt, Roissy, etc.), commercial buildings and major public facilities (Météor, St Lazare station, Shanghai Opera House), as well as the complete restructuring of buildings in sensitive historical sites, Jean Marie Charpentier has always been fascinated by Asia, and particularly China.
