Two houses built in the United States during the 1990s and totally different from each other in terms of site, required programs and silhouette. The Stretto House in Dallas derives its name from a music piece by Bartok using the ‘stretto’ method in which Holl attempted to architecturize the analogy between the sound-time relationship in this music and the light-space relationship in this house. The Y House was built in the Catskills Mountains in the state of New York on a remote hilly terrain as a weekend retreat. Both houses demonstrate the strategy and manipulation that grow out of Holl’s architectural thinking.
