In recent years, the ‘network society’ has had an increasingly significant impact on government policy. The state has designated six national urban networks, including Randstad Holland en Brabantstad. These are areas consisting of larger and smaller cities, separated by open spaces. The central government encourages provincial and municipal collaboration within such networks, with the aim of increasing support at the economic, demographic and infrastructural levels. The collective planning developments in the Groningen-Assen region have been fused into the so-called Groningen-Assen Regional Vision, in which accommodation, space for water, nature, landscape, recreation, sports and agriculture are brought together. Ambitions as lofty as these need maps, specifically zoning maps. In Afhankelijk van de legenda kan kortom alles een kaart zijn, so-called cultural cartography has given functional zoning cartography new dimensions. Subjective perceptions and memories of the town and the country act as cartographic benchmarks in this case, as opposed to objective, quantifiable data. In this book, three artists chart their personal experiences of parts of this region, namely graphic artist Christoph Fink, author Marcel Möring and performance artist and composer Harry de Wit. Their ‘cartographical’ contributions are introduced to the reader in an essay by Steven van Schuppen.
