After is life in Brazil, Johan Maurits would spend the rest of his life trying to shape in Kleve. He had extensive landscape parks laid out there. Here he immediately started sweeping landscape changes. To this end, he brought Jacob van Campen to Kleve. Near his palace Haus Freudenberg and at other places around the city of Cleve, Johan Maurice had classicist parks with canals and fountains and star-shaped systems of avenues laid out in the already existing forests. This set is known as The Cleve Gardens. They were restored, after a period of decline, towards the end of the 20th century.
