China has a long history of garden design, resulting in the emergence of a unique style and diverse forms of expression. Common to all Chinese gardens is that they follow the principle that less is sometimes more, and are designed to evoke a sense of the infinite.
Chen wrote his text in five essays between 1978 and 1982, and these appeared in succession in the Journal of Tongji University. Due to continuing demand, they were eventually published as a book with 32 photographs and Chinese calligraphy by Jiang Qiting. This first German edition is based on that edition.
