This booklet presents several plates from Volume IV of The Birds of Europe, devoted to game birds and waders. Its author, John Gould (1804–1881), was a taxidermist, restorer, and curator at the Zoological Society of London, and was closely associated with Britain’s leading naturalists. The lithographs were produced by his wife, Elizabeth Coxen Gould (1804–1841), as well as by Edward Lear (1812–1888), a poet, musician, ornithologist, and one of the finest natural history painters of the nineteenth century.
