Negentig jaar adviezen over ruimtelijke kwaliteit in Noord-Holland (Ninety years of advice about spatial quality in North Holland) is a lavishly illustrated book with aerial photos, previously unpublished historical material alternated with quotes from texts about the beauty of the province’s villages, cities and landscapes. The Welstandscommissie Noord-Holland – the commission of building inspectors for the enforcement of regulations regarding the external appearance of buildings – was founded following the 1916 flood disaster for the purpose of promoting and preserving the beauty and the quality of the villages, cities and landscapes in the province. After the disaster, a wave of building activities began that threatened to permanently harm the landscape.
