Naoki Honjo: Tokyo

A seemingly endless sea of matchbox-sized buildings and skyscrapers; this is Tokyo as it’s never been represented before. Naoki Honjo, whose use of the tilt-shift technique while flying high above the city – resulting in a very shallow depth of field with selective areas of focus creates disorienting bird’s-eye views that at first glance seem to be photographs of a huge, meticulously constructed model of the Japanese metropolis. Recognisable real-world landmarks such as the Tokyo Tower, or districts like Shinjuku and Koto City, are reduced to farcically miniature proportions, even as we realise the vistas are merely the result of Honjo’s skilfully applied trick of the camera lens.
